About us

The Genesis

DealShaq was founded out of a hot gumbo of frustration, passion, and determination. On the one hand, 40% of the food produced in the US is not consumed by people. In the US grocery retail / distributor industry alone, about 16 billion pounds of food could not be sold last year, of which 2.5 billion (15.5%) was donated, while the remaining 13.5 billion pounds of non-donated unsold surplus foods (N-DUSF) was discarded or recycled. On the other hand, more than 47 million of our neighbors including 14 million children, are struggling financially, and suffering from food insecurity. As a food rescue volunteer, DealShaq’s founder & CEO Alfred Toussaint witnesses these struggles from both grocers and food pantry clients 2 to 3 times a week.

Food insecurity is exacerbated by the 22.6% increase in the food CPI from May 2020 to May 2024, resulting, unsurprisingly, with 88% of food-insecure residents in the DMV citing food price increases having major impact on their finances (CAFB). DealShaq aims to fundamentally disrupt the status quo of retail food loss & waste and food insecurity in the communities we serve, by challenging its grocery food retail partners to target a substantial percentage of their N-DUSF, for drastic discount aimed preferentially to financially struggling food-insecure families first.

Triple Bottom Line Core Values

Planet: Supporting our planet, by helping retailers target a meaningful percentage of their non-donated unsold surplus food, for sale at 50%+ discount to food-insecure families, thereby averting significant food waste and greenhouse gas emissions into our atmosphere.

People: Supporting our food-insecure neighbors, by helping retailers as above, thereby stretching their food budgets by 2X while reducing their food insecurity level.

Profit: Supporting our grocery retailer partners, by helping them as above, thereby turning losses to incremental revenue by monetizing unsold surplus food that would otherwise be discarded incurring additional costs.

Our Story 1/6
As cofounder of a previous technology startup that wanted to sell grocery and restaurant food online, while addressing the food waste, loss, and insecurity problem, Alfred Toussaint was challenged early into the pandemic by one of his advisors: Volunteer at a local food charity that accepts food donations from grocery retailers.
Our Story 2/6
Three food charities, four grocery retailers and thousands of hours later (still counting). collecting hundreds of thousands of donated meal-equivalents from the likes of Whole Foods Market, Trader Joe's, Sprout Farmers Market, and Target, in Reston, Herndon, and Sterling, and delivering to food pantries & their clients.
Our Story 3/6
across Northern Virginia's Dulles Corridor, Alfred became acutely aware of both the agonizing struggles grocers face every evening deciding what to do with staggering amounts of unsold foods (he's a witness 2 to 3 times a week), and the multi-dimensional challenges food-insecure families face on a daily basis.
Our Story 4/6
Non-donated unsold surplus foods account for 84.5% of all unsold grocery foods in the U.S. (16 billion pounds), according to ReFED and the Pacific Coast Collaborative Food Waste Commitment. USDA estimates the national food insecurity level at 47 million. Capital Area Food Bank estimates 1.5 million of our DMV neighbors are
Our Story 5/6
food-insecure (37%), dwarfing the number of clients served by the 2 major food charities Alfred volunteers for (thousands - with his volunteerism feeding hundreds weekly). The significant amount of knowledge and insight of the grocery industry, food loss & waste, food
Our Story 6/6
insecurity & charity accumulated by Alfred over the past several years (w/ data & charts to prove it), coupled with his passion, and the fierce urgency for an effective, inclusive, and synergistic triple bottom line solution (people, planet, profit), drove the founding of DealShaq Technologies.
